The Pingyao Film Festival welcomes Director Tsui Hark. Every year, we invite a director to present their film concepts and understanding to our audience, young filmmakers, and our media. In the past, directors such as Li Cangdong and Zhang Yimou have had exchanges on this venue. I was lucky to have director Tsui Hark this year. When I invited director Tsui Hark, I was a little worried because "Chosin Reservoir" was being released. He was so busy that it was unknown whether he would have time to come to Pingyao. As a result, director Tsui Hark was very generous to come to Pingyao to meet everyone. We were discussing where to start the topic together. I had the idea of having Director Xu choose his own representative work and talk about the concept, creative process, and his ideas for this work. Director Xu said he wants to think about it, but he said he doesn't really want to talk about his own works and wants to talk about other directors. I've been waiting for Director Xu to tell us which movie he wants to tell us about. One day, he said he wanted to tell us about Hitchcock and his "Dial M for Murder" (1954). This (choice) is unexpected and reasonable. We can see the secret connection between these two (directors) in Xu's past works. Why did you choose Hitchcock? I think the topic can start here in a moment. Regarding Hitchcock, perhaps everyone is very familiar with his works on the one hand. In recent years, Hitchcock's works have consistently ranked among the top in books and various charts on the history of European and American films. Such a director has received high attention since his appearance, especially since the 1950s and 1960s, when he was highly regarded by French New Wave directors including Godard and Trevor. What kind of nutrients did they absorb from Hitchcock? Director Xu has also been following Hitchcock since the filming of the New Wave in Hong Kong, and there are interesting internal relationships involved. I think everyone present has also read the dialogue between Trevor and Hitchcock, and I still remember that directors like Melville were also inspired by him, and generations of filmmakers have been inspired by this Hollywood director's works.
